Let's ease into it with the big question: who are you?
Haha! Well, let’s see… I grew up in India but have lived in Sweden for eleven years. I'm analytical and detail-oriented. I love traveling. My goal is to visit 50 countries before I turn 50. I think I’m at 48 now, with 13 years to go, so it’s looking good. I also enjoy cooking, outdoor activities, cycling, and trying out the latest tech gadgets.
I’ve got to ask, what’s the latest gadget you bought?
It’s probably a TENS device. It’s a little thing you attach to your muscles that sends out electrical impulses to help them relax. Or it might have been a steam oven. We’re renovating the kitchen.
What made you move to Sweden more than a decade ago?
Where I grew up, in western India, it was really hot. We didn’t have any winter at all. For some reason I always dreamed of living somewhere with really cold weather. So when the opportunity came up there wasn’t much to think about. I was living in the Netherlands at the time, but obviously that wasn’t cold enough for me.
So, what’s the verdict? Is it everything you dreamed of?
Sweden has let me experience so many things I never would have back home. The work/life balance, the incredible nature, the opportunity to enjoy solitude, both at home and outdoors. But I’ve also discovered the downsides. The winter months aren’t always as magically sparkling as I imagined when I was young.
Can you tell us a bit about what you've been up to since you moved here?
I’ve worked at Electrolux in Stockholm in various roles, most recently as the category manager for air purification products. On the personal front, notable highlights are that I’ve built a close circle of friends, found a partner and bought our first home together. Oh, and I’ve picked up a Swedish driver’s license and passport.
Now you're becoming the new Product Manager for Ouman's white label products. What does that role involve?
As the title suggests, I'll be responsible for our product portfolio. I’ll be specifying which products we should add, where to sell them, and so on. What do our clients need? How can we create that? Those kinds of questions. Ouman is already very strong from a technical perspective, but hopefully, I can help develop those aspects.
Why Ouman?
I actually stumbled upon it. Some points that attracted me besides the role on offer are the Finnish history of Ouman, the current umbrella of Ernströmgruppen as owners and the industry in general. It's a company with short decision-making processes. I really like that. Since I’m the first Product Manager here in Sweden, I believe I’ll have a lot of freedom to shape the role myself. Also, I was drawn to the chance to work with products that help people live more sustainably, a topic that engages me and that I have some experience in. I think it’s good to step outside your comfort zone now and then, and this feels like just the right step for me.
What are you looking forward to the most in your new job?
Seeing the first product that I’ve taken all the way from idea to reality. But first, I’m going to dive into and analyze the products we already have. I’m also excited to get to know all the new people.
Is there anything you'd like to say to your new colleagues and clients now that you have your 15 minutes of fame on the website?
Oh, that’s a tough one. I’m really looking forward to working with all of you!
Now, the final and most important question: what’s the best Indian restaurant in Gothenburg?
I’ll have to get back to you on that. I’ve only had the chance to try one so far, the joint right by the office. But in Stockholm, I’d say Bazar in Sundbyberg.
We thank Darshan for the chat and warmly welcome him (or maybe he would prefer coldly?) to Ouman!
